Life isn’t always easy! Sometimes things change. People separate, or families decide to move interstate to start a new life, and at these times, self-storage is an absolute lifesaver.
Providing space for people to rent or store personal or business items, it offers a short-term or long-term option to keep everything safe. All in all, it’s better economically than renting additional rooms or renovating your property for extra space.
If you don’t have room/capacity to take things that you care about with you, a self-storage unit gives you that peace of mind. Here are some reasons why storage might be the perfect option for you!
Self-Storage: Why Bother To Use It?

We all experience constant changes to our needs, lifestyle and space and benefit from personal storage.
1. Moving to a New Home
Whether you’ve put a deposit on a house or are transitioning to a new rental property, there are many steps to accomplish that you cannot do in a day.
You might even need to leave your current place of residence and have limited space available for your things. You won’t always be able to shift things to your new place.
Although you can ask friends or family for support, they might not have room for bulky (or valuable) furniture or belongings. A storage unit solves these problems and holds onto things when you are ready to take them.
2. Home Renovations
Are you renovating your home, such as extending upwards or outwards? A self-storage unit is a great help for temporarily storing carpets, furniture and other appliances.
Avoid damages, debris or dust from renovations, such as adding a new room, remodelling house walls, or reconstructing leaking roofs. Once the renovations are complete, you can put the furniture arrangements or appliances back into their original positions.
3. Major Life Events
Relationships change, and if you’ve filed for divorce, sometimes the aftermath is sticky and long-lasting. A storage unit works as a bridge to keep sentimental items in a secure location.
Couples who separate but still co-parent, for example, may leave the current property and find a new place to live. In some cases, a partner might have moved interstate and couldn’t bring items with them, so a storage unit is another temporary option until the partner is in a stable place to retrieve them.
Likewise, new couples who want to move in together quickly may prefer a storage unit to keep belongings as they prepare for the shift. This gives the couple a chance to set up a new house.
4. Downsizing and Decluttering
Running out of space, or have plans to reorganise your belongings? You might be content with your present property, but you just don’t have the space to put things.
That said, a larger house over time can be unaffordable for some, so a storage unit is perfect for furniture or valuables. And when selling your home during the downsizing process, a decluttered area looks more attractive to a buyer, helping it sell faster. You don’t need to compromise on what you keep.
5. Vehicle Storage
Whether you have a project car sitting in the backyard taking up too much space or want one of your cars (or boats) off your driveway, out of the weather and secure, a storage unit is a great move.
Internal storage options are available for short-term or long-term use. Maintain vehicle condition, market value, save on insurance costs, and prevent unnecessary repairs.

6. Extended Travel
Travelling for business purposes or a personal holiday? Whatever the reason, it’s a good idea to store all of your important documents and belongings in a storage unit, especially if you’re leaving for weeks at a time.
You won’t need to worry about stolen items when leaving home. Travel is more convenient since you’re not carrying around anything bulky.

How Do You Go About Planning Your Storage Space?
Label your boxes and make an inventory list. Take pictures for easy reference in case you need to locate items in the future, and get items together or organise by room.
Fill space. Heavy things such as tools, furniture or books should be packed in small, strong boxes and placed at the bottom. Partly empty or badly packed boxes collapse or tip! Fragile items should be packed in storage boxes with packing paper or bubble wrap for protection and placed on top.
Disassemble things such as tables or bedframes if possible, and keep all parts (such as screws) in a plastic bag and tape them to the item. Irregular-shaped boxes and pieces of furniture can be placed into gaps or on top of stacked boxes, which have formed a solid base!
Make the space easily accessible by placing large, heavy items at the back of the storage space, working methodically forwards and upwards with much lighter-weight or fragile items such as paintings. Feel free to place frequently used items near the front of the space; depending on your storage needs, aisle access can work better.
As for height, don’t just fill the floor space: stack it to the roof to store more items and boxes.
Storage Works Space Estimator
Our smallest sizes range from 1 cubic metre (1m³) lockers and similar small storage spaces. These are ideal for students, backpackers, and travellers looking for holiday storage. Our larger storage spaces suit large households, business uses such as archive and document storage, and storage of inventory or furniture arriving in containers. Larger spaces come with a higher rental fee.
It is best to rent a size appropriate for the items you need to store, and the configuration that affords the greatest accessibility. Ask us to help you determine which size space is best for your needs.
If you plan to fill the space from floor to ceiling with neatly organised items that you never need to access, a smaller unit might work. If you will need frequent access to the items in storage, you need to carefully consider the space size and location.
Choose a space that allows you to quickly, efficiently and safely access belongings.
